Buying maps at discount prices is just the same as knowing there will be new maps in the near future so you should only buy the offers if not interested in latest maps (and pricing) - there is absolute nothing news in that TT strategy.

I'm sorry, but I just cannot understand these "I only bought a new Device/Map a while ago and now they've bought out another one" moans.

What do you expect? TomTom to sit on new devices until YOU decide you want one?

If you read any of the forums, it has been mentioned time and time again that TomTom release new map versions roughly quarterly, and as mentioned above and in many other posts, a "map sale" is a sure indicator that new maps are on their way soon.

And as for software, I think we are damned lucky we get ANY free software updates for OLD models.
Do you expect Microsoft to give you a new free copy of "Office" when that gets released?

As the main topic (new maps) already has a topic devoted to it (with 10+ replies) could we continue there?

And if TT didn't offer free software updates I'm sure most of us would be using pirated copies of its software, just as most MS Office applications are illegal downloads.

At least MSOffice gets service pack updates to fix bugs and add new features...

Perhaps the mapping model should be changed - i.e. we pay an extra few quid when we buy the device but we get free map updates for 3 years.

Oh dear, Andy stand by for the flood gates to open. I know of 2 people following a repair and upgrade of PC's that ended up with Illegal copies of MS Office.

there is such a product already in existance, only on the ONE and GO 520 formats, its called the Business editions which are sold through business suppliers such as PCWorld business and total PDA.

I have one and have got a second map option to use in the future.... smile.gif

Intelligence vs Intellect/Conditionings
When a person is for or against, he’s operating in “godding” or “godded” mode. He knows it all or really knows nothing. Ego vs Conditionings. Aggression vs Depression. Accelerator vs Brake. Maculinity vs femininity. Stupidity vs Dumbness. To circumvent such tricky mind-fields, one should always revert back to logic aka intelligence. Meaning?

Meaning, why is my TT720 always getting things wrong other than major trunks like motorways [and who in noddie-land needs help when driving along the motorway? – You !! Bless my boots !]. Why can’t I locate POIs in my locality which is in a city? Why can’t I locate simple things like a major-ish airport? I’m lying or incompetent now, am I? And finally, why are the mappers in WEU located in some small place which is mostly under sea-level? Could that be why their seemingly DIY-ish technique in mapping the UK be unduly influenced by perhaps being made to question whether "today" might bring that doomsday flood or not?

What, getting annoyed already? What about me and my parting of £250+++ for semi-junk, “not fit for the purpose” etc. etc. What? Return it to the retailer and contrast my opinion to theirs as to the suitability and merchantability? Doesn’t TT knows about this [and the fact that without “GPS-fix”, it takes ages for satellite lock-ons which was NOT there until GPS-fix really fixed the firmware for good – marketing lock-in perhaps]. Am I lying again? Neither stupidity nor dumbness is the word. Deceit, subtefuge, connivance, greed-cum-fear and anything devolutionary you can think of, perhaps? Now, how about giving me REAL updates for THE UK, which is mostly above sea-level and as such, the populace need not wonder if a doomsday flood might happens tomorrow and thence perhaps those DIY-mappers will do a proper mapping job, one that does not require “updates” to missing roads and road names. ‘Mack, if you’ve just awaken from the Ice Age, we, the learned few, are intelligently discussing about lane-change and similar advanced, intelligent, 23rd century GPS highlights which will bypass you completely”. “What, like Navigon’s & now, Blaupunk’s Achtung stuff that most are starting to parrot you mean, sweeties. Do you think our dear Teutonic brothers will do a better job of mapping the UK? No? impossible? Afterall, what do they know.”

Guess what. I’m voluntarily generous about PAYing the likes of TT more money to obtain a REAL update - and no plural please. Is that fair or more “updates” of the “Tulips really do cost more than houses, you know” variety before we can receive real maps. No, not those that work on motorways mainly, thencee the “lane-change” over-spiel, perhaps, but those that will deliver me to some area near some major trunk without me wondering whether to tow along my old paper maps. You disagree dear know-it-all? You are not related to the architect of those maps by any chance? If so, they need you to locate and map precisely where those doomsday floods just might creep and overwhelm your brothers and sisters. Thank God for human intellect, intelligence can take a well derserved rest. Judge others if one must but why not judge others’ motives first? Eh? Atterall, satisfaction is just another word for Love-in-progress. Yours lovingly, blinkered ....

Wecome to the forum.
So to paraphrase then. You have some issues with the mapping, and felt the need to vent a little. pleasantry.gif

Incidentally, tomtom have little to do with the actual 'mapping'. That would be 'Tele-Atlas' , perhaps you should go and explain your problems to them.

Hi this is my first post. I have just purchased a tomtom 930 and after reading about the new map release I was able to update my Western Europe map to v8.10, using the map guarantee but it has not updated my USA map. Should I do something else? Also why are there two versions of the western Europe map on the tomtom home site, one is 1481.3 mb and the other one is 1974.5 mb
Regards

Welcome to the list from a relatively new poster too.
The reason for shipping the 930 the smaller map is that without a 4 GB SDHC card (make a search on that for options) the internal memory gets a little cramped.
Best bet is to to raise a support question in you MyTomTom on their web site.
Give it the subject POP and attach a scanned copy of your bill of sale.
Then call them the next day. My to other phone calls only took about two minutes on hold, not like this one.

Be warned that when you ring it is quite likely the call centre staff will try to argue that you are only entitled to have ONE of your maps updated.

Be polite but persistent, it can take quite a fight, but many others on the forums have eventually got both maps updated.

I read Greigster's post as having upgraded his W&CE map with LMG but HOME says his NA map is current. That is exactly the opposite I experienced with my Canadian bought 930 where LMG updated the NA map but refused the W&CE one. That Is why I made a reference to what I had experienced.
If there is an 810 NA map for the 930, Greigster is entitled to the LMG for it.
I agree that we should always be polite and considerate but he should insist upon his right.

Thanks for the advise. Could you tell me what the difference is between the two European maps and am I missing any map details from only having the smaller version?

I don't know what your versions/options are.
Mine came with the 1.4 GB 800.1729 map named Western_and_Central_Europe_2GB (nice touch!).
After calling and supplying Proof of Purchase info my account was credited with the 1.8 GB Western_and_Central_Europe map.
Other listees suggested that the larger map contained many more Cspeech files for the different countries in Europe. I did not make a line-for-line comparison.
Since that larger map was a 3 month newer edition it would have obviously contained less errors than the old one.
Three months for the latter may not make much difference as we constantly read that MapShares posted two years prior had still not been incorporated in the "newest" version.
